October X, 2024, Hillsborough, CA - The Nueva School (Nueva) is excited to announce a multi-year grant from The Children’s Education Initiative (TCEI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in San Diego dedicated to improving the quality of education for socioeconomically disadvantaged children. TCEI has awarded Nueva a $1.3 million grant to fund multiple students from kindergarten through 8th grade. For students who continue through 12th grade at the school, Nueva is committed to providing 100% financial assistance in their final four years.

In its outreach to potential partner schools, TCEI focused on schools that actively work to enhance access for underrepresented groups in independent schools. TCEI selected Nueva as a partner based on its challenging curriculum for gifted students, outstanding student outcomes and long-established commitment to increase diversity, inclusion and access to a Nueva education. Further, TCEI recognized Nueva’s recent commitment to full tuition coverage for families making less than $150,000 annually.

Head of School, Lee Fertig, says, “Increasing socioeconomic diversity at Nueva is a strategic priority. At Nueva, we firmly believe that embracing diverse perspectives is at the core of ensuring students become interculturally competent and engaged global citizens. This transformative grant from TCEI will help Nueva fulfill its vision of enabling gifted students to make choices that benefit the world, no matter their families’ income levels.”

Nueva’s financial assistance program has been pivotal in making gifted education accessible to a diverse range of students. Currently, 20% of Nueva families receive some sort of financial assistance. Over the past three years, Nueva added 34 students to the number of students benefiting from the financial assistance program, accompanied by a $1.7M increase in allocated funds. This growth in the program is fueled by tuition revenue, annual fund donations, major gifts and the endowment fund.

Director of Admission, Melanie Léon, adds, “Nueva seeks to enroll gifted learners with a deep love of learning, and we know that these students can be found in every community. We are thrilled that this partnership will help expand access to more families, ensuring that gifted learners from diverse backgrounds will have access to Nueva.”

Nueva is deeply grateful to TCEI for its generosity. This grant marks the beginning of a lasting partnership between Nueva and TCEI, highlighting the shared commitment to the power of independent school education in shaping young people’s future contributions to society.
